The Drop' In: Samdi

“An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times.”

Nina Simone

And no other Haitian artist moves with that intent and purpose like visual artist and painter, Samdi. Challenging the way we experience, and interact with art with his indelible signature strokes, he is writing a new narrative for his native country on and off the canvas. Founding The RAD Gallery in Haiti 2020, he is championing, and collaborating with a new generation of emerging Haïtian contemporary talent, reminding the world of Haiti's legacy as a multi-faceted and multidisciplinary art hub, is alive and breaking boundaries. In a moment of pause, when this silent/cool artist wasn't preoccupied in a stroke of genius, he recently drop' in to reflect on Learning to be a Friend story shared what the piece got him thinkin' about:

Are you an introvert or extrovert?

Depends, I think 🤔 I shift between the two. But from the outsiders perspective I would definitely come off as an extrovert.

When it comes to friends, quantity or quality? Or both?

Quality for sure.

If you could go back and teach your younger self one thing about friendships, what would that be?

Try to find friends that tell you what you need to hear, and not what you want to hear. People that champion you, but always keep it real.

In this digital age, how do you make time for friends?

I don't. 😆 to me true friends are the ones that it doesn't matter how long it's been since we seen each other. There is an understanding that you have a whole life so when we get to see each other it's all love. Time apart shouldn't change anything.

What’s the most amazing thing a friend has ever done for you?

Too many to list! My friends have been like family to me. I've been blessed with a great support system.
